Year 4 Maths brings decimals, equivalent fractions and harder operations that many students find tricky for the first time. This is where earlier gaps start to show, and our program fixes them head-on.
Key Topics Covered:
Decimals to hundredths, equivalent fractions, multiplication facts to 10 x 10, area and perimeter, angles, grid references and symmetry.
Parent Tip:
Year 4 is the runway to Year 5 NAPLAN in March. If multiplication felt tricky in Year 3, fractions will too, so we fill earlier gaps first.

Year 4 Maths Curriculum, Term by Term
Term 1
| No. | Topic | What We Cover |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Understanding Tenths and Hundredths | Explore decimal place value by modelling tenths and hundredths with base-ten blocks, decipipes and paper strips. Students see that decimals show parts of a whole. |
| 02 | Reading and Writing Decimals in Context | Read, write and interpret decimals in real situations such as money and measurement, comparing two dollars seventy-five with 2.75 metres. |
| 03 | Renaming Decimals | Rename decimals using place value links, such as 1/10 = 0.1, 1/100 = 0.01 and 0.25 as 25 hundredths. Fraction and decimal links are made explicit. |
| 04 | Decimal Number Lines: Tenths and Hundredths | Place decimals on number lines between 0 and 1 and learn to read positions between whole numbers with precision. |
| 05 | Odd and Even Numbers | Explain the properties of odd and even numbers, explore patterns such as odd + odd = even, and justify whether a number can be shared equally between two. |
| 06 | Divisibility and Even Sharing | Follow simple algorithms and flowcharts to test whether numbers are divisible by 2, and explore equal grouping with materials. |
| 07 | Equivalent Fractions Using Models | Build equivalent fractions with paper folding, pattern blocks and capacity models, such as 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8. |
| 08 | Fraction and Decimal Connections | Link fractions to decimals using metres, litres and concrete models, such as 1/4 = 0.25. |
| 09 | Counting by Fractions and Mixed Numerals | Count in halves, quarters and thirds, move between improper fractions and mixed numerals and show them on number lines. |
| 10 | Multiplying and Dividing by 10 | Use place value charts to see how multiplying and dividing by 10 shifts digits left or right. |
