Year 5
We've Got the Curriculum Covered
At TutorExel, our Year 5 Mathematics program builds a strong foundation in key skills. Lessons are tailored to your child’s pace and aligned with the Australian National Curriculum.
Tutoring is delivered through 1-on-1 or group online sessions, guided by expert tutors who focus on real progress.
TERM 1 – Number & Place Value
S.No
Topic
What We Cover
1
Decimals – Place Value & Ordering (Part 1)
Students explore decimal place value up to thousandths using concrete models such as place-value charts and base-ten representations. Focus is on understanding tenths, hundredths, and thousandths and how decimals relate to whole numbers.
2
Decimals – Ordering & Representation (Part 2)
Builds on Session 1 by comparing, ordering, and representing decimals on number lines. Students justify which decimal is greater or smaller using place-value reasoning and visual models.
3
Factors & Multiples – Concept & Lists
Introduces factors and multiples through grouping, arrays, and skip counting. Students learn to list factors and multiples of numbers and recognise basic divisibility rules for 2, 5, and 10.
4
Divisibility & LCM/HCF
Extends factor knowledge to common factors and common multiples. Students determine highest common factor (HCF) and lowest common multiple (LCM) using listing and reasoning strategies.
5
Fractions – Equivalent & Comparison
Students identify and generate equivalent fractions using fraction walls, visual models, and number lines. Emphasis is placed on understanding fraction size rather than rote rules.
6
Comparing & Ordering Fractions (Part 2)
Students compare and order fractions with related denominators and numerators. Strategies include visual comparison, conversion to equivalent forms, and reasoning without calculators.
7
Percentages – Concept + Links to Fractions
Introduces percentages as “parts per hundred” using grids and visual models. Students connect percentages to familiar fractions such as halves, quarters, and tenths.
8
Percentages – Applications & Problems
Applies percentage understanding to real-life contexts such as discounts, increase/decrease, and complementary percentages. Emphasis on reasoning rather than formulas.
9
Add & Subtract Fractions
Students add and subtract fractions with related denominators using visual and numerical strategies. Real-world word problems are used to reinforce understanding.
10
Problem Solving & Review
Consolidation of decimals, fractions, and percentages through multi-step problem solving. Students explain strategies and check solutions for reasonableness.
TERM 2 – Operations & Algebra
S.No
Topic
What We Cover
1
Multiplication Strategies (2-digit×1-digit)
Students use arrays, partitioning, and mental strategies to multiply 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. Focus is on conceptual understanding before algorithms.
2
Multiplication with 2-digit×2-digit & Algorithms
Introduces standard written multiplication methods. Students connect algorithms to place-value understanding and check results using estimation.
3
Division Basics + Remainders
Students explore division as sharing and grouping, including remainders. Word problems are used to interpret remainders meaningfully.
4
Estimation & Reasonableness
Students estimate results for all four operations and judge whether answers are reasonable. Focus on rounding, front-end estimation, and real-world decision making.
5
Algebraic Patterns & Inverse Relations
Students identify number patterns, describe rules, and explore inverse relationships between addition–subtraction and multiplication–division.
6
Simple Equations – Find Unknown Values
Introduces simple algebraic equations with missing values. Students solve using balance and inverse reasoning rather than guesswork.
7
Algorithmic Thinking & Digital Patterns
Students create and follow step-by-step instructions using patterns and simple digital tools such as spreadsheets or tables.
8
Two-Step Word Problems (Mixed Ops)
Students solve multi-step problems involving combinations of operations. Emphasis on selecting the correct strategy and explaining reasoning.
9
Integrated Reasoning Challenge
Collaborative problem-solving session combining number and algebra concepts. Students analyse, plan, and justify solutions.
10
Assessment & Review
Review of Term 2 concepts followed by a structured assessment focusing on reasoning, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
TERM 3 – Measurement & Geometry
S.No
Topic
What We Cover
1
Metric Units & Conversions
Students revise metric units and convert between millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres using practical examples.
2
Perimeter of Shapes
Students calculate perimeter of regular and irregular shapes and apply understanding to real-life contexts such as fencing and boundaries.
3
Area of Regular Shapes
Focuses on area of rectangles and squares using grid models and formulas. Students connect area to multiplication concepts.
4
Area of Irregular & Composite Shapes
Students find areas of composite shapes by splitting them into simpler rectangles. Emphasis on logical breakdown rather than complexity.
5
Time – 12/24 hr Conversions
Students convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time and calculate elapsed time in everyday scenarios.
6
Measuring Angles
Students identify and measure angles using protractors and classify angles as acute, obtuse, right, straight, or reflex.
7
Constructing Triangles & Angle Types
Students construct triangles using given measurements and explore angle relationships within triangles.
8
Nets of 3D Shapes
Students identify and build nets of 3D shapes, linking nets to real-world packaging and design.
9
Coordinates & Transformations
Introduces coordinate grids and simple transformations such as translations and reflections.
10
Assessment & Review
Practical assessment covering measurement and geometry concepts learned during the term.
